The
Apex Challenge was first dreamed up in 2002 by a group of
young Yorkshire Scout leaders to help to launch the new programme
for Explorer Scouts. The plan was combine all the best bits
about Scouting in 2002, but cut out all the rubbish. It was
loosely based on international events like the Ace
Races and the Solomon Challenge.
A
very successful one day competition was organised in September
2002 which led to a tougher overnight one being held in
May 2003. Both
events have since been held annually and are open to both
Explorer and Network Scouts from across the UK. Full details
of all out past events
are available on this site.
Teamwork and strategy are crucial as teams plan their route and try to collect as many Apex Points as possible. The "Chase And Hide" element was added later to create more excitement, encouraging teams to stick to the undergrowth rather than main footpaths or they risk LOSING points. And to prove they'd been caught by the chasing team, there was always the official photo confirming their fate!
In 2006, it was decided to try a new format of event - the Apex
Extreme - which runs across a whole weekend. This was held in
October of that year for the first time. In 2007 because of the centenary
celebrations it was decided to hold just one event, and due to the
first Apex Extreme being such a success a similar event was held in
2007 and it is rapidly becoming a regular part of our annual event
schedule.
